The gross cost of labor might be 30% cheaper in some place like India. But productivity and attrition may not always meet expectations. Language and cultural differences can extend employee training. Or cause other complications. But there may always be jobs that are right for outsourcing. Others, though, can be dependent on common culture. Like phone support. Or application interface testing. Just a couple of examples. In some cases, offshoring jobs does make great economic sense. But not always. For the software tester / phone support role, we find that offshoring provides a net gain of about 1% hard-cost savings than bestshoring in the U.S. With financial incentives from state and local governments, the cost savings easily overtake offshoring.
